Currently, I am managing two different business from two different verticals and is managing multiple teams which includes marketing, software development, IT Infrastructure, operations, distribution and HR and even taught senior executives and managers of fortune companies on how to do the same.
I am sure most of the readers who stumbled on this page have sound idea of what exactly delegation is but to few who are not aware of the theory or are confused about the exact definition, I would like to simplify it. Delegation is the backbone of organizational leadership and is one of the core management theories. It is the act of assigning responsibilities to the subordinates or authorizing one of the many subordinates to carry a specific task or job. Effective delegation helps organization in carrying multiple tasks and also saving resources.
Delegation is not Inter mediation:
Whether it is a small team within a region or a large team spread across multiple locations, effective delegation is the key to organization success but due to lack of clarity on the theory, most managers confuse the theory with micromanagement. In delegation, the subordinate act as a deputy to the manager or the leader and is answerable to the tasks he is undertaking besides owning the responsibility of building team, managing resources and answering stakeholders while in Inter mediation, a sub ordinate only carry out the tasks as defined by his superiors and is not entitled to take the decisions and are subject to carry out the tasks according to rule book.
How to become effective in delegation:
Like any management theory, mastering the art of delegation demands lot of practice and holistic learning from other individuals, while their are no set of rules to be followed while delegating tasks among subordinates but managers should adhere to some unwritten rules and tips to make sure the delegation is successful and productive. Some of them are:
- While delegating, managers should select delegates by performing fair and objective oriented assessment and should educate the subordinate why he was chosen for the work
- Managers should communicate what organization is expecting from the delegate and what he is expecting from him with respect to the task and should also help him in identifying his core strength with respect to the job
- Managers should clearly communicate about the standard industrial procedures, team procedures and organizational procedures while delegating but should be cautious about overstepping in defining the procedures otherwise it will result in poor delegation
- Managers should conduct orientation and training program for the subordinates on how to build the team, procedures, sub delegation and processes but must avoid imposing his/her own theories on the delegates as it might result in micromanagement and wastage of organization resources.
Delegation as a tool help managers in achieving productivity, the better a manager in delegation the better is his team or organization performance.
